Staff and students at Gower College Swansea are keen to support this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight with a series of events and promotions.
The student-led Environment Group organised a Fayre at the Gorseinon campus on Monday 2 March, where everyone was encouraged to sample some delicious Fairtrade produce.
At the Tycoch campus, Level 3 Patisserie students used Fairtrade ingredients to make teisen lap, banana tarts filled with a crème patisserie, fruit tarts and treacle tart.
Pancakes made with Fairtrade chocolate and bananas have also been available to buy in the college canteens.
Gower College Swansea is working towards the promotion of Fairtrade products and principles including the establishment of a Fairtrade steering group and the development of a Fairtrade policy statement.
All tea, coffee, hot chocolate and sugar sold or ordered through the college’s refectories is Fairtrade, as well as selected chocolate bars. There is also a Fairtrade drinks vending machine at Tycoch.
This is the twentieth year of Fairtrade Fortnight and the focus for 2015 is on the successes to date and the stories behind some of the producers. Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. It’s about supporting the development of thriving farming and working communities so they have more control over their futures and protecting the environment in which they live and work.
