IT students from Gower College Swansea's Tycoch campus have been working alongside the Swansea Young Single Homeless Project (SYSHP) to assist them with the development of a dedicated website.
During a recent visit to the organisation, the Level 2 and 3 students were given an opportunity to understand the core values of the project and gained an appreciation of the vital role it plays in the local community.
SYSHP supports young people aged between 16 and 25 who are made homeless.
Students are now taking part in a competition where they will tasked with developing a website to highlight the excellent provision this vital organisation offers young people living in Swansea.
Representatives of SYSHP, along with members of the Swansea business community, will judge the best website design and the expectation is that the winning entry will be developed as the organisation’s actual website.
"Completing this project will equip students with experience that can be used as evidence for their Welsh Baccalaureate qualification and their Key Skills," says lecturer Bev Morgan. "It will also provide very valuable work experience that they will benefit greatly from when looking to enter the industry after the completion of their studies."
This collaboration came about thanks to college receptionist Carolyn Hughes. After being shown around the projects' Swansea offices, Carolyn was very impressed with the variation of work they carry out and how they help the young homeless in Swansea, and suggested to the IT department that they get involved.
