Gower College Swansea's Science Academy continued with a bang as Matthew Tosh, award-winning science pyro-technician, gave a dynamic and highly inspirational presentation on the science behind fireworks.
Matthew's recent visit to the Tycoch campus took students through the fundamental aspects of combustion, pyro-chemistry and physics and included a fascinating insight into the science of special effects and pyrotechnics. The event was organised through the college's Reaching Wider programme and included indoor fireworks to enthuse and inspire students on their Applied Science courses.
The college was also able to open up the opportunity to pupils from Birchgrove and Pontarddulais Comprehensive schools who spent the morning with Matthew watching demonstrations of live fireworks and learning how they are made.
David Bawden, part of the Reaching Wider team at the college, said: "We are extremely proud to give science students at Gower College Swansea the opportunity to broaden their understanding of the wider field of science. The Science Academy enhances and enriches the science curriculum, providing our students with the chance to learn about a whole range of science-related career pathways."
The school pupils also enjoyed the experience – typical comments included: " A fantastic presentation. I wasn't expecting such as loud bang! Quite possibly the loudest noise I have ever heard!"
