Motivational workshops impact on staff and students

A series of motivational and thought-provoking workshops with guest speaker Jamie Denyer have made a huge impression on students and staff at Gower College Swansea

The workshops aimed to promote positive thoughts and behaviour while encouraging young people to think about the consequences of their actions. One, entitled One Punch Can Kill, focused on the tragic death of Jamie's 19-year old nephew.

Thanks to backing from the Innovation Fund, the workshops were set up for selected students across the college to examine motivation and positive character building techniques.

Project gets students thinking about money and health

A Level Health and Social Care students from Gower College Swansea recently held a special enterprise / health promotion event at the Gorseinon campus.

Working in groups, they were awarded a £200 grant each from Lloyds Banking Group’s Money for Life Project to organise a campaign called 'For Students By Students.’

This was a fun and creative way for students to share their money management skills while learning about the factors that affect our health and well-being.

College builds sports links with school

As part of Gower College Swansea's ongoing relationship with Birchgrove Comprehensive School's PE department, Year 11 BTEC pupils visit the Gorseinon campus gym and use the new facilities on a fortnightly basis.

In addition, they are able to pick up advice on the BTEC Level 2 Sport course and possible progression opportunities into college.

New block

New teaching block at Gorseinon officially opened

A brand new £2.8 million teaching block at the Gorseinon campus of Gower College Swansea has been officially unveiled.

Accommodating 11 classrooms, seven IT suites, a gym with shower facilities and a bicycle shelter, it was formally opened on 6 February by Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.

Students face Global Enterprise Challenge

Students from Gower College Swansea have been putting their business brains to good use this week by taking part in the annual Global Enterprise Challenge College Final.

The Global Enterprise Challenge is a Welsh Government endorsed scheme that provides young people with the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to assist them in the transition from college to work, including the ability to develop and nurture career-focused skills in areas including team work, communication, leadership, enterprise and creativity, innovation and time management.

E-mentoring project helps students into healthcare

A group of students from Gower College Swansea are set to benefit from an innovative e-mentoring project, set up by The Mullany Fund, specifically for young people aspiring to careers in healthcare.

“We are an educational charity that works to address the lack of social mobility within the healthcare professions,” says Mandy Westcott, Mullany E-mentoring Project Manager. “Our objective is to inspire and support young people into careers in medicine and other related healthcare professions,”

College hosts Skills Competition Wales regional heat

Gower College Swansea recently geared up to host the Skills Competition Wales regional heat for Automobile Technology.

Eight students from across South Wales converged at the Gorseinon campus on 30 January, where they were given four practical 30-minute tasks to complete under the watchful eye of a panel of judges drawn from education and industry.
