Message to students, parents and guardians from Principal Mark Jones

As we enter winter and move nearer to Christmas, the good news is that COVID infection rates in Wales continue to fall.

However, in the media recently there has been a number of stories concerning respiratory infections circulating within the community including flu, COVID and other bacterial infections.

Public Health Wales has recently updated their guidance for people suffering with symptoms of respiratory infection and we feel, as a College, that it is important that we highlight this to you so you can be more aware of how to protect against infection.

Students enjoy textiles workshop

AS and A Level Textiles students enjoyed a weaving workshop with Llio James, a Welsh practitioner with a strong interest in developing the relationship between hand weaving and the traditional woollen industry within Wales. 

Exploring the feeling of belonging to ‘country and culture,’ colour plays an important role in her design process as she examines proportion, scale and geometric shapes when hand weaving bespoke cloth.

Two WorldSkills UK medal wins for Gower College Swansea!

Over 500 of the best students and apprentices from all over the UK came together for hours of intense competition in November, to be crowned as WorldSkills UK National Final winners.

WorldSkills is a global movement of over 80 countries which supports young people across the world via competition-based training. The UK National Final saw young people compete in 62 disciplines from 3D Digital Game Art to Laboratory Technician, and medalists were announced during an online celebration event on Friday 25 November.

Young entrepreneur impresses business leaders

Gower College Swansea student William Evans is showing a real practical flair for entrepreneurship despite being just 16 years of age.

Two years ago Will, who is studying a BTEC Business course at the Gorseinon campus, started selling eggs from his family’s smallholding in the Gower. As the community was under lockdown at the time, Will took the initiative and offered a home delivery service which proved very popular with his customers who were looking to shop locally.

Two triumphs for Gower College Swansea's netball team

Gower College Swansea's netball team are celebrating after two recent successes.

An 8-7 win against Coleg Gwent Cross Keys at the Sport Wales National Centre gave them a a perfect six-game record, making them 2022-23 Welsh Colleges Champions!

Gower College Swansea’s annual higher education graduation at Swansea Arena

Around 300 Higher Education students from Gower College Swansea attended a special graduation event at the Swansea Arena on 16 November 2022. A celebration held for the achievements of students studying higher education and professional programmes at the College for number of catch-up awarding years that were unable to celebrate during the pandemic, and our most recent graduates.

Important information for our Gorseinon neighbours re: Campus extension and refurbishment plans

Dear resident, you will hopefully be aware of Gower College Swansea’s intention to further develop its Gorseinon campus through extending one of its existing buildings, as well as the refurbishment of a number of existing classrooms.  We are also planning to improve the existing traffic management layout, as well as widening the access onto Belgrave Road which we believe will help to reduce any congestion at the entrance and improve safety.

Nursing and midwifery taster day

We organised a Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work Taster Day jointly with Hywel TEifi Academy, Swansea University for those students who have an interest in following a career in those fields.

The day was organised by our Welsh Manager, Anna Davies, “The aim was to encourage Welsh-medium students to study their Nursing, Midwifery or Social Work course in Welsh at Swansea University, and apply for an incentive scholarship that is attached to those courses.”
