Dragon Multi-skills and Sport Festival

Gower College Swansea recently held two days of activities for primary school pupils at the Elba sports complex in Gowerton. The college linked with the City and County of Swansea Active Young People team to deliver the Dragon Multi-skills and Sport Festival. This annual event attracted over 566 pupils from eight local schools. Each pupil sampled up to six activities, choosing from a range which included football, hockey, golf and rounders. Staff and sport students from the college had visited schools over the preceding weeks to provide coaching and raise awareness of the event.

Student drama transfers to Chapter Arts Centre

The Gower College Swansea One Year Acting Company staged the gritty play “13” at the Swansea Grand Theatre in March. This was followed by an invitation to transfer to the Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff and the production will open there on 22 July and run until 26 July.

Guest director Catherine Paskell is an Associate Director for the National Theatre of Wales.

Curriculum Leader Bob Barton commented: “Working on the play has been a joy and discovering the world in which ‘13’ is set has really opened all our eyes to the sensation that our world is spinning out of control.”

Creative writing competition is a winner

Gower College Swansea has held a creative writing competition to which all AS English students were invited to submit entries consisting of short stories, dramatic monologues or opening chapters. The entries were judged by Jeanne-Marie Williams, English lecturer, who had organised the competition, who was delighted with the standard of work submitted.

Fun in the sun for students

Over 50 ESOL students from Gower College Swansea were recently treated to an end-of-term sports day at the 360 Centre where they enjoyed beach volleyball, rounders and an egg and spoon race in the glorious sunshine.

The day was organised by Level 3 Sports students from the Tycoch campus and the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) teaching team.

Awards for work placement students

The achievements of Gower College Swansea’s Independent Living Skills (ILS) students have been recognised at a special celebratory buffet.

Throughout the year, ILS students are placed on work experience with local employers and within college departments such as caretaking and finance. Representatives at the buffet included employers from the Dragon Hotel, Evening Post, Grape & Olive, Radio Tircoed, Remploy, Rose Garden Day Nursery, Sainsbury’s and Swansea University.

Nadine receives national recognition

A Gower College Swansea student has been highly commended at the Pearson Annual Awards. Nadine Bellamy was nominated by her tutor, Tina Isaac, for the national Pearson Vocational Learner of the Year Award. Nadine was one of hundreds of students nominated and was shortlisted to the final stage, receiving a Highly Commended certificate within the category.

Corey runner up at VQ Learner of the Year Awards

Seventeen year old electronics learner Corey Nixon from Gower College Swansea was a runner up at Wales’ VQ Learner of the Year showpiece awards ceremony on VQ Day at Coleg y Cymoedd’s Nantgarw Campus. He was one of six finalists from across Wales who were all congratulated by Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology, Ken Skates.

VQ Day is a national celebration of people who have achieved success in vocational education in Wales.

Students take top three places in the Industrial Electronics World Skills Welsh Regional Final

Gower College Swansea hosted the Industrial Electronics World Skills Welsh Regional Final on 3 June and saw its own students securing first, second and third places! Corey Nixon came out on top, having already won the Welsh Industrial Skills Final. Christopher Protheroe took second place and Chantelle Simpson came third.

Corey was also on the shortlist for the VQ Day Learner of the Year 2014.

Sport Awards ceremony recognises exceptional achievements

Gower College Swansea has celebrated the success of its sport students with a Sports Awards evening at the Liberty Stadium.

Among those receiving recognition on the evening was Molly Davies Briskham who won the Gareth Jenkins Award for Sports Volunteer of the Year. She was presented with her award by former student Eli Walker from the Ospreys.
