The City of Swansea Branch Royal British Legion has invited students from our BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts to be part of the Festival of Remembrance on 8 November at the newly refurbished Brangwyn Hall.
The students presented a devised piece inspired by their research into WW1 last November. They visited the battlefields of the Somme and attended the last post service at the Menin Gate in Ypres. It was a special trip for staff and students and has been much talked about since.
The purpose was to raise awareness in the minds of the students and staff of WW1 in preparation for the start of the 100 year commemoration events. The piece the students created used photos, sculptures, poetry, letters, film footage and their own interpretation of real events – they used them to create text, movement and songs to tell some of the stories and capture some of the emotions associated with the events in WW1.
The Community Fundraising officer for The Branch City of Swansea Branch Royal British Legion saw the original production and, as a result, he invited us to take part in this special event. We feel proud and honoured to be asked to play a part in such an important event for Swansea.
