Achieving an A* grade at A Level is a fantastic achievement – gaining five of them is truly remarkable.
But that’s what happened to Gower College Swansea student James Miller on results day back in August.
James studied A Levels in Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry, as well as the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales (ASBW), at the Gorseinon Campus.
“I chose maths, biology and chemistry because I originally intended to apply to study dentistry at university,” says James. “I’d always found physics a fascinating subject while I felt the ASBW gave me the opportunity to develop essential research and project skills.”
Initially, James’ plan was to study all five subjects to AS Level but, as he enjoyed every class and achieved high UMS in his AS exams at the end of the first year, he made the decision to continue with all five subjects to the full A Level.
Like all students, James found the wait for results day a nerve wracking experience and he felt anxious particularly about physics and biology, due to the high grade boundaries and strict mark schemes. It was therefore a huge relief to open his results and see that he had achieved an A* in both of those subjects.
“Although I was predicted five A* grades, it wasn’t something that I had really anticipated so I was delighted to open the envelope,” says James. “I was also extremely happy to see that so many of my friends, who had supported me throughout my studies, had achieved incredible grades as well.”
Among the many positives of studying at Gower College Swansea, James appreciated the excellent facilities, particularly the library, and the many opportunities to participate in Olympiads and super-curricular activities like the UKMT Maths Challenge.
“However, the absolute best thing about studying at the College was the exceptional level of support I received throughout my time studying here, with teachers always taking the time to answer my many questions thoroughly,” he says. “The support also extended beyond my A Levels, with valuable help available for my UCAS application through GCS Honours and the Medics, Dentists and Vets (MDV) Programme.”
James has now decided to take a gap year before starting university, during which time he has returned to Gower College Swansea to study A Level Further Mathematics.
He is also undertaking a range of work, including tutoring, while saving up to do some travelling at the end of the year.
Then, in terms of potential career paths, James is exploring a wide range of fields including healthcare, engineering, mathematics and science. During his gap year, he hopes to gain valuable experience that will enable him to decide which path he would like to pursue, whilst also strengthening his UCAS application for his chosen course at university.
“Five A* grades is an extraordinary achievement, and I congratulate James on the dedication, curiosity, and hard work behind these outstanding results,” says Principal Paul Kift. “We are incredibly proud of him, just as we are proud of all our learners who work hard, overcome challenges, and take their next steps towards achieving their ambitions.
"It is particularly rewarding to hear how our staff helped James to flourish, giving him the support and encouragement to explore his interests and aim high. His story is a wonderful reminder of what education can make possible – one which I’m sure will inspire others to believe in their own potential.“James, congratulations from all of us at Gower College Swansea. We are delighted that you are continuing your journey with us through Further Mathematics, and we look forward to seeing where your talent and enthusiasm take you next – we’ll be following with great interest and pride.”
