Silver award for Accountancy students

Three AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting students from Gower College Swansea are celebrating after scooping Silver at the Intermediate Accounting SkillsCompetition Wales event at Coleg Sir Gar.

Demi-Lee Clement, Stela Kovacheva and Jasmeet Gaba undertook a range of tasks designed to assess their technical ability and team working potential within a ‘fictional’ accounts department.

Two new appointments for Gower College Swansea

Gower College Swansea has appointed a brand new Deputy Principal and Director of Skills and Business Development.

Nick Brazil, who started his new role as Deputy Principal in January, first joined the college as a Sport/PE lecturer in 1993. He was then appointed Curriculum Support Manager before progressing through the organisation as Programme Area Manager, Director of Faculty and then Dean of Faculty – a position he held for seven years.

A project of hope for Holocaust Memorial Day

Level 2 Art and Design students from Llwyn y Bryn have created a poignant piece of art for Holocaust Memorial Day.

“We wanted to incorporate words of hate into the piece with the express intention of transforming them into something positive,” says lecturer Marilyn Jones. “We wrote the words down on paper and then scrunched them up, using them to make up the design of the HMD logo. It was a very powerful act for the students, with a focus on bringing hope to the future.”

THIS IS ME campaign launched to challenge gender stereotypes and prevent abuse

A new Welsh Government multi-media campaign has been launched today to tackle some of the underlying reasons for violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence.

The TV, radio and online adverts show people in situations challenging our ideas about gender. A man working as a midwife, a woman working as a mechanic, a young man expertly applying make-up and a girl playing with a truck, covered in mud. 

People are being encouraged to engage in the online campaign to talk about their experiences and concepts of stereotypes using #thisisme.

Gower College Swansea in running for accountancy awards

Gower College Swansea has been shortlisted as Accountancy College of the Year (Public Sector) at the forthcoming PQ Magazine awards – a title it scooped in 2016.

In fact, this is the third consecutive year that the College – currently the only FE organisation in the UK to be awarded Platinum Partner status by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants – has been honoured at these awards.

Success for college swimmer

Gower College Swansea student Niamh Jones, who is studying for her A Levels at the Gorseinon campus, took part in the recent Urdd National Swimming Gala where she received a Bronze medal in the breaststroke event.

Niamh was competing against pupils and students from all over Wales in the 16-19 age category.

Nursing and midwifery taster day

Following Gower College Swansea’s successful bid for Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol funding, students with an interest in studying nursing, midwifery or social work through the medium of Welsh were able to attend a taster day at Swansea University.

College launches litter picking project

College launches litter picking project

Staff and students at Gower College Swansea are rolling up their sleeves and donning gloves and high-vis jackets as they begin a new litter picking initiative around the Gorseinon campus.

This community project is being driven by Cllr Kelly Roberts, who is a former student of the College, and Assistant Learning Area Manager Jenny Hill.

“I’ve been very impressed with the enthusiasm of the staff and students at the College and the way they have really bought into this new initiative,” says Cllr Roberts.
