Introduction to Creating Art for Health and Wellbeing
Overview
This short course will provide an introduction to the connection between art practice and wellbeing. Allowing participants to develop new skills within creative practices such as painting and illustration along with other workshops, we will explore how creativity can promote positive wellbeing and facilitate communication, helping to relieve symptoms of stress and anxiety.
Suitable for beginners and those looking to reconnect with their creative side.
The weekly sessions will be delivered in the classroom at a comfortable pace allowing time for practice and discussion. Hands-on creative sessions include time for group discussion as well as self-reflection. Some of the practical exercises will include exploring topics such as:
- The value of art making on health and wellbeing
- Art exploring the family dynamic
- Identity
- Grief
By the end of the course you will have:
- Discussed topics in the arts and wellbeing movement
- Connected with others interested in the value of arts and health
- Experimented with a variety of materials
- Began developing your own practice in art and wellbeing

The course is for those interested in the topic of arts and health who want to discover how creative practice can bring about positive changes to your wellbeing. The course is not about talent or the outcome but is about the process and what you can gain from developing an art’s practice.
The course is classroom based, delivered in two-hour sessions once per week. This adds up to 16 hours of lesson time over the period of eight weeks.
Although students will successfully complete the course during this time, it is essential for students to spend extra time per week studying the subject to ensure high levels of success.
This course is an unaccredited qualification that will provide learners with experience and a portfolio of work. You have put the work in so we want to make sure you have something to show for it.
If you attend a minimum of 80% of your classes, we will provide you with a certificate of attendance. It is recommended you attend all classes so that you can get the most out of the experience.
