Kick Start student Nathaniel Parker has steadily made his way to ‘top in the class’ at the Gorseinon campus.
The Kick Start Programme is an initiative developed by Gower College Swansea and aimed at Key Stage 4 students who enrol at college to complete a BTEC in Vocational Studies. It enables students to study a range of different pathways and gives them the opportunity to discover an area of interest that they could pursue on leaving school.
“Nathaniel is working towards a BTEC Level 1 for planning and organising vehicle maintenance,” says lecturer Keiron Palmer. “I first met him when he attended a Saturday class in Tycoch, where he was very keen to learn and was able to perform a range of tasks. Nathaniel has continued this enthusiasm while attending classes at Gorseinon and carries out the set tasks with little supervision."
“The motor vehicle workshops are laid out exactly like a real garage, with every tool you could ever have to hand,” says Birchgrove pupil Nathaniel. “I like to take the lead on practical tasks and have the responsibility of mentoring my peers. After I finish school I hope to apply for a motor vehicle course at Gower College Swansea. I know how important this course is to help me progress onto running my own garage in the future.”
