Gower College Swansea recently geared up to host the Skills Competition Wales regional heat for Automobile Technology.
Eight students from across South Wales converged at the Gorseinon campus on 30 January, where they were given four practical 30-minute tasks to complete under the watchful eye of a panel of judges drawn from education and industry.
“The competitors are all working towards their Level 2 qualifications and were asked to undertake specific skills tests associated with sector requirements,” says Curriculum Leader for Motor Vehicle Lee Hayward. “They were asked to look at cooling systems, brakes, engines and electrics.”
Competitors represented Gower College Swansea, Coleg Sir Gar, NPTC Group, Bridgend, Coleg Gwent and Cardiff and Vale.
“We wanted to be as inclusive as possible so we extended an invite to all colleges in the South Wales region,” adds Lee. “We’ve also been very fortunate to have on board some fantastic sponsors in John Rickard Motor Factors, Normag Motor Factors, Snap On Tools, Halfords and Gravells Kia.”
The top three candidates from this event were named as Dylan Charles from Gower College Swansea (first), Ben Lloyd from Coleg Sir Gar (second) and Joseph Jackson from NPTC Group (third.)
They, along with the top three from a second regional heat taking place in Coleg Menai on the same day, will now go through to the final at Coleg Cambria on 27 February.
