Students head to UK's top performance colleges

Gower College Swansea students have secured places at some of the most in-demand acting and theatre schools in the country.

The students – from a range of BTEC Performing Arts, Production Arts and A Level Drama courses – are coming to the end of their time at the Gorseinon campus and are looking forward to the next stage in their careers.

Sporting students head to AoC National Championships

Over 30 students from Gower College Swansea have qualified to represent the region at the AoC Sport National Championships 2017.

The students – specialising in a range of different sports including football, netball, hockey, rugby, golf, cross country and ladies football - fought off stiff competition from colleges across the UK for the chance to participate in the national finals at the University of Nottingham and surrounding facilities on 21-23 April.

'Revolting Pirates' at the National Waterfront Museum - 1 April

After a hugely successful tour that has seen them visit 25 local schools and perform in front of an estimated 4000 children, our first year BTEC Performing / Production Arts students are taking their 'Revolting Pirates' show to The National Waterfront Museum on Saturday 1 April.

There are FREE PERFORMANCES at 1pm and 3pm.

GCS Mens Football team through to British Colleges final

Gower College Swansea's Mens Football team has reached the final of the British Colleges Elite Football Cup after a stunning 5-2 victory over Heart of Worcestershire College in the semi finals.

"This is a truly fantastic achievement and we are all incredibly proud of the team," says Learning Area Manager Marcus Westmoreland. "We now turn our attention towards the final which will be held at St Andrews - home of Birmingham City FC - on 3 May."

Congratulations to Catering students

Catering students Collette Gorvett and Paige Jones represented Gower College Swansea at the SkillsCompetition Wales final at Cardiff and Vale College yesterday.

They had to a) prepare a variety of table layups b) prepare and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and cocktails within a time frame and c) cook and present Steak Diane in the restaurant under the watchful eye of the judges.

Students enjoy sport conference

A group of L3 Sport students on the Gorseinon campus visited a ‘Bilingualism in Sport’ conference at Cardiff and Vale College.

The day was organised by the college, following sponsorship from CollegesWales, with the aim of promoting the Welsh language in sport. There was an interesting session from Huw Llywelyn Davies about commentating bilingually for the BBC on rugby, football and cricket games, and students got a taste of commentating on live games.

Celebrating 'Welsh Week'

We had a week full of events to celebrate Welshness in the college around our Patron Saint day - St David’s Day.

The common rooms on every campus were decorated all over with daffodils, yellow and green balloons, Welsh flags and daffodil and leek bunting from pillar to pillar. Of course there was plenty of free Welsh cakes for students as well!

Gower College Swansea is currently supporting four young female apprentices as they take their first steps towards a career in science.

Hazel Hinder, Sally Hughes and Courteney Peart (Tata Steel) and Meghan Maddox (Vale Europe) are studying BTEC Diploma in Applied Science and NVQ Lab Technician at the Tycoch campus.

The award-winning Hair Lounge Salon (which has premises in Fforestfach and Skewen) looks to its apprentices to assist in the smooth running of the business on a day to day basis.

Senior stylist Adrian took the apprenticeship route and has worked at the Hair Lounge for almost five years.

College / industry collaboration leads to apprenticeship opportunities

Gower College Swansea has developed an exciting collaboration with industrial electronics specialists Kontroltek, who are based in Bridgend, after both organisations saw a potential opportunity to move students seamlessly from the college environment into successful, motivating apprenticeships.

Kontroltek specialise in electronic, electrical and mechanical repairs and supply. They currently have 40 employees but have extensive ambitions to grow their workforce using the ‘next generation’ of electronic engineers.
