Overview

Ready to elevate your sewing to the next level? This advanced course introduces you to the art of pattern cutting, empowering you to move beyond commercial patterns and create garments tailored precisely to your own measurements and style.

In this course, you’ll step into the world of pattern cutting, learning how to draft your own sewing patterns from scratch. With expert guidance, you’ll develop an understanding of body measurements, drafting techniques, and pattern manipulation, enabling you to create bespoke templates that form the foundation of your designs.

You’ll produce your own set of personal pattern blocks, which can be adapted and reused to design a range of custom garments with a perfect fit. This process will deepen your knowledge of garment structure, proportion, and construction, while giving you greater creative freedom in your work.

Working in a supportive and professional studio environment, you’ll refine your technical accuracy, build confidence in your drafting skills, and gain the independence to design and create original pieces.

Experience with a sewing machine and a solid understanding of basic garment construction is required, as this course does not cover these elements. Completing Sewing Skills for Beginners and Making Fashion Garments is highly beneficial.

What you'll need

All essential sewing and pattern cutting equipment is provided, but owning a sewing machine is highly recommended to practice your skills outside of lessons.

Key information

Advanced - learners will need to have a basic knowledge of using a sewing machine and basic garment construction knowledge, for example previous experience of sewing a basic garment.

Classes take place in our small, friendly sewing and design studio at the Llwyn y Bryn Campus, Uplands. With access to a range of sewing equipment, you’ll learn in a relaxed yet inspiring environment.

The course is delivered through a combination of demonstration and practical based lectures, with 1:1 support.

Learners are required to complete a workbook of evidence to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding and their competence in practice.

A range of assessment methods will be used, such as:

  • Direct observation of practice
  • Written annotations
  • Practical outcomes
  • Personal evaluation and reflection.

Progression from any part-time course could offer a pathway to full-time courses in art and design. For adult learners considering a creative career, the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course could provide a progression route for this.

Successful completion of the course provides learners with an AGORED certificate.

A studio fee of £30 is required for the course, to cover the materials and equipment you will be provided with.

Your tutor will let you know if there’s anything else you’ll need to get for yourself.

All work can be collected on completion of booklet.
