Overview

Ready to take the next step in your sewing journey? This course is designed for those with basic sewing experience who want to progress from simple projects to creating their own fashion garments.

This course offers the opportunity to make a garment of your choice using a commercial sewing pattern, guided by the expert support and tuition of an experienced fashion lecturer. You’ll build on your existing skills while developing a deeper understanding of garment construction and professional techniques.

Throughout the course, you’ll explore key elements of the dressmaking process, including selecting suitable fabrics, accurately cutting pattern pieces, and assembling garments with precision. You’ll practise essential techniques such as seaming, hemming, and finishing, gaining the confidence to transform a flat pattern into a well-constructed, wearable piece.

Working in a supportive and creative environment, you’ll be encouraged to develop your independence while refining your technical skills and attention to detail.

Some prior experience with a sewing machine is required. Completing the Sewing Skills for Beginners course is highly beneficial. This course is ideal for those ready to elevate their sewing skills and begin creating their own handmade wardrobe.

What you'll need

All essential sewing and pattern cutting equipment is provided, but owning a sewing machine is highly recommended to practice your skills outside of lessons.

Progression from any part-time course could offer a pathway to full-time courses in art and design. For adult learners considering a creative career, the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course could provide a progression route for this.

Successful completion of the course provides learners with an AGORED certificate.

A studio fee of £10 is required for the course, to cover the basic materials and equipment you will be provided with.

Your tutor will let you know if there’s anything else you’ll need to get for yourself.
