Sporting students head to AoC National Championships

Over 30 students from Gower College Swansea have qualified to represent the region at the AoC Sport National Championships 2017.

The students – specialising in a range of different sports including football, netball, hockey, rugby, golf, cross country and ladies football - fought off stiff competition from colleges across the UK for the chance to participate in the national finals at the University of Nottingham and surrounding facilities on 21-23 April.

GCS Mens Football team through to British Colleges final

Gower College Swansea's Mens Football team has reached the final of the British Colleges Elite Football Cup after a stunning 5-2 victory over Heart of Worcestershire College in the semi finals.

"This is a truly fantastic achievement and we are all incredibly proud of the team," says Learning Area Manager Marcus Westmoreland. "We now turn our attention towards the final which will be held at St Andrews - home of Birmingham City FC - on 3 May."

GCS student shortlisted for BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year

Gower College Swansea student Keelan Giles (centre) has been shortlisted for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2016.

This is a fantastic achievement for Keelan, who completed a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and was a key member of the college's Rugby Academy.

The winner will be presented with their award on BBC One's The One Show on Wednesday, 14 December (19:00 GMT).

GCS celebrates sporting success

It’s been another very eventful and successful few weeks for Gower College Swansea Sport:

Alice Reynolds won the European Archery Tournament (IFAA) over three days in Valencia, competing against archers from all over the world including Youth Olympic medallists and eventually breaking her own Welsh record, breaking the European record and taking gold!

Kick Start students explore sporting opportunities

Dylan Thomas Community School students have been treated to a football session as a reward for completing their Kick Start qualification at Gower College Swansea’s Tycoch campus.

Sport lecturer Andrew Stokes gave the students an insight into various sports courses and the career opportunities that could follow.

Welsh Girls make history at UK College Sport Finals

Students from Wales’ Further Education colleges re-wrote the record books and reached new heights in female team sports at last weekend’s AoC Sport National Championships in Newcastle.

Three of the Welsh Colleges women’s teams, competing against 11 other national and regional squads from around the UK, won podium positions in the blue riband rugby, netball and hockey competitions.

A fantastic weekend for college at AOC National Championships!

Gower College Swansea is celebrating after a fantastic weekend at the AoC National Championships in Newcastle. 

There were over 2000 students in attendance, with the Welsh team consisting of 180 (57 of these were from Gower College Swansea - the biggest representation from a Welsh college.)

College wins tennis award

Gower College Swansea has won an award from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) Wales region.

The college’s Sport department was one of three finalists in the Education category at the 2015 Tennis Wales Awards, which was held at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama on 20 February. This was in recognition of the wide range of tennis activities the college organises throughout the year as part of the wider curriculum.

National success for netball students

For the second consecutive year, a netball team comprising Gower College Swansea students is celebrating national success after taking part in the recent Urdd Netball competitions in Cardiff.

In the quarter finals the team won 19-10 against Cardiff High before beating NPTC 4-8 in the semi-final. In the final round, the score was 14-8 against the Haberdashers.
