International students flying high!

An amazing 60% of our International A Level students achieved A* and A grades in their recent exams.

Over 90% of these students have since been accepted to study at prestigious Russell Group universities, including Cambridge.

Some of our confirmed student destinations are as follows:

Haolin Wu (from China) achieved four A* grades and will now study Land Economy at Christ College, Cambridge.

Yuzhe Zhang (China) has received a £180k scholarship to study Geology at Imperial College, London.

Farewell to the Class of 2019

Some of our departing international A level students recently attended a graduation lunch at Sketty Hall.

The lunch was a celebration of the students time at the College and all guests enjoyed a traditional British meal.

Our A2 students currently hold offers from 20 of the 24 Russell Group Universities, including Oxbridge.

The International department wishes all of our A2 students a fond farewell and every success for their future.

Urdd Eisteddfod Medals

This year, our International art students secured multiple Urdd Eisteddfod awards across various mediums.

In the regional heat, Korean student Bella took the first place in both the Computer Graphics and Graphics in Photography categories.

Our Chinese students also took home prizes. Photography student Trista took the first place in the Monochrome Print category, while Iris won the Printing and Fashion category at the Regionals and then went on to achieve second place at the Nationals in the same category.

International department receives education award

Gower College Swansea has received an Education First (EF) High School Global Education Excellence Award.

The award was given to the College in recognition of its role in helping a number of their students achieve excellent A Level results and progress to some of the world’s most prestigious universities.

Cambridge visit

Our International students were among a group of over 80 learners who attended this year’s Swansea HE+ Consortium visit to Cambridge.

The event included subject specific masterclasses, college visits and a relaxing punting session on the River Cam.

Pictured here are Jasmine and Molly, both from China, who are studying maths and sciences at Gower College Swansea.

Sister School partnership agreed

Gower College Swansea has signed a ‘Sister School’ partnership with Wuhan No. 49 High School, China, with both parties agreeing to participate in student and staff exchanges and share best practice.

Wuhan is an official sister city of Swansea. Their ties date back to the 1800s when Griffith John, a pioneering missionary from Swansea, lived in the area and founded one of the largest hospitals in China, The Wuhan Union Hospital.

It is hoped that a group of Wuhan students and teachers will visit the College this year for a study tour.

Cissy returns to the stage for Chinese New Year event

Cissy, a second year International student, took centre stage again this year at the Chinese New Year celebrations held at the National Waterfront Museum.

The event is organised by the Chinese in Wales Association and has grown steadily in popularity since its launch.

Cissy charmed visitors by playing the erhu, a traditional Chinese instrument.

International students celebrating top university offers

Our International students are currently holding offers from some of the UK’s top universities, including 20 of the 24 Russell Group Universities.

“This is further evidence of the outstanding standard of teaching and learning at Gower College Swansea,” says International Manager Kieran Keogh.

“Over the last three years, more than 90% of our International students have progressed to Russell Group Universities including Oxbridge, and - going on this year’s university offers - that trend looks set to continue.”

Continued maths success

A total of 65 students from Gower College Swansea took part in the recent Individual Senior Maths Challenge (these challenges are undertaken by more than 600,000 students from more than 4000 schools and college across the UK).

Gower College Swansea students gained 11 Golds, 11 Silvers and 15 Bronzes, with ten students scoring highly enough to go through to the next round of the competition.

Nine of these were from our International cohort - pictured here are Tony, Brian, Jonas, Jasmine, Lucy and Faye.

International schools on the horizon for College

Gower College Swansea recently welcomed Dr. Wen Cao - Dean of International at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) - who presented to senior managers and board members on the topic of K-12 international education in China.

"The College aims to establish an international school in China so it was an excellent opportunity to gain valuable insight from an organisation that has already established five international A Level schools in the region," says International Manager Kieran Keogh.
