This module examines Additional Learning Needs (ALN) from a historical perspective to the current government guidance. It has a clear focus on the impact of this legislation on practice.
This module aimed at those working in the industry who want to develop their knowledge and skills whilst still being suitable for someone who has a genuine interest in the topic. It starts by introducing the history of ALN and inclusion and works through to the legislation, roles and responsibilities of individuals and organisations. The module has a continuous practical focus that will enable you to develop your practice in a work environment.
It is being delivered by Gower College Swansea and accredited by Cardiff Metropolitan University. It is a 20 credit level 4 module that is a standalone qualification. The course counts towards CPD requirements, enhancing professional skills and knowledge in line with current educational standards.
This module aims to:
- Explore the historical developments in the fields of inclusion, disability and ALN
- Develop an understanding of the principal features of additional learning needs, disability and inclusion in a range of contexts
- Examine the principles of inclusion and the impact of theory and legislation on professional practice
- Develop awareness of a range of skills relevant to graduate-level employment and professional concepts, including those already in development via course content and those through prior experience.
The module learning outcomes:
- Analyse key legislation and policy
- Apply key legislation and policies to the roles of practitioners, institutions and others supporting learners with ALN
- Identify and comment on key theories and concepts in the areas of additional learning needs, disability and inclusion
- Identify strategies to meet individual needs of children, young people and or adults in their educational settings
- Complete academic writing to the appropriate level.

Standard entry
Combinations of the qualifications below are acceptable and other qualifications not listed may also be accepted on an individual basis:
- Typical A-Level Offer: DD
- Typical BTEC Offer: relevant BTEC level 3 profile of Merit/Pass or Pass/Pass/Pass
- Typical Welsh Bacc Offer: Grade C and DE at A Level
- Typical Access to HE Offer: Pass Diploma with 60 credits overall to include 45 level 3 credits all passes.
Non-Standard Entry
Candidates who do not possess normal minimum entry qualifications e.g. mature students with relevant employment experience will be considered on an individual basis by the Programme Lead and other members of the programme team.
Part-time
- 15 of learning in the Tycoch Campus
- 10 hours of online lectures
- 25 of directed online learning.
There is an additional commitment to studying and completing assignment work and this will be supported by your lecturer.
Assessment
- Assignment 1: Portfolio – 2,000 words equivalent [50%]
- Assignment 2: Written assessment – 2,000 words [50%]
This course is graded in percentages in line with Cardiff Metropolitan University standards (opens in new window).
Microcredentials are developed to be standalone qualifications for professionals within in industry or for those wishing to work in the industry. There are other microcredentials that you can apply for within the College, for example Trauma Informed Practice.
Course costs
£660 although funding may be available to those who live or work in Swansea.
