This module introduces the concepts of trauma and its effects on the individual in the short and long term. It then focuses on how to provide support using trauma informed practice.
This module aimed at those working in the industry who want to develop their knowledge and skills whilst still being suitable for someone who has a genuine interest in the topic. It starts by introducing what is meant by trauma and how trauma affects individuals socially, emotionally, mentally and biologically. It then moves on to looking how to support those individuals in an education setting.
It is being delivered by Gower College Swansea and accredited by Cardiff Metropolitan University (opens in new window). It is a 20 credit level 5 module that is a standalone qualification. The course counts towards CPD requirements, enhancing professional skills and knowledge in line with current educational standards.
This module aims to:
- To introduce the concept of trauma, leading theoretical concepts of trauma and the impact of trauma on the individual
- To apply the principles of trauma informed practice to case studies/own practice
- To develop critical and written communication.
The module learning outcomes:
- Identify a range of traumas linked to current practice in the PCET sector
- Evaluate the impact of trauma on the individual
- Synthesis a range of theoretical concepts of trauma
- Apply principles of trauma informed practice to a case study/own practice whilst recognising potential difficulties or conflicting perspectives
- Communicate and organise information using a range of relevant resources.

Standard Entry
Combinations of the qualifications below are acceptable and other qualifications not listed may also be accepted on an individual basis:
- Typical A-Level Offer: DD
- Typical BTEC Offer: relevant BTEC level 3 profile of Merit/Pass or Pass/Pass/Pass
- Typical Welsh Bacc Offer: Grade C and DE at A Level
- Typical Access to HE Offer: Pass Diploma with 60 credits overall to include 45 level 3 credits all passes.
Non-Standard Entry
Candidates who do not possess normal minimum entry qualifications e.g. mature students with relevant employment experience will be considered on an individual basis by the Programme Lead and other members of the programme team.
Part-time
- 15 hours of learning in the Tycoch college campus
- 10 hours of online lectures
- 25 hours of directed online learning.
There is an additional commitment to studying and completing assignment work and this will be supported by your lecturer.
Assessment
- Assignment 1: Presentation – 10 minutes [35%]
- Assignment 2: Written assessment – 2500 words [65%]
This course is graded in percentages in line with Cardiff Metropolitan University standards (opens in new window).
Microcredentials are developed to be standalone qualifications for professionals within in industry or for those wishing to work in the industry. There are other microcredentials that you can apply for within the College, for example Additional Learning Needs and Inclusive Practice for Industry.
Course costs
£660 although funding may be available to those who live or work in Swansea.
