Overview

Portable Appliance Testing is aimed at all personnel intending to work within this sector, or those who require this qualification to undertake daily working activities.

The qualification provides learners with an understanding of the theory and practice of the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment, commonly referred to as PAT testing. Learners will develop and practice the skills required to inspect and test items of electrical equipment in line with the latest edition of the Code of Practice for in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment.

Key information

Learners are expected to posses a relevant trade qualification and/or have working knowledge of the electrical wiring regulations covering the following:

  • An understanding of Ohm’s Law is a necessity
  • A practical skill in requirement in wiring such as a 13A plug top
  • An understanding of the Electricity at Work act 1989
  • A further understanding of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)

Each application is considered on individual merit, however formal qualifications may not be required dependent on the above minimal experience.

Please note that dependent on your skills and qualifications, an interview may be required.
Candidates will require a copy of The Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing (Fifth edition), as well as a calculator, pen and paper. A mobile phone cannot be used as a calculator.

The course will be delivered over three days, consisting of classroom theory and practical instruction, which is followed by an open book examination and practical assignment.
