Our Mechanical Engineering Level 4 HNC course opens the doors to a wide range of local employers by providing you with higher-level skills required by local industry.
The students will develop transferable skills that will be of value in a wide range of situations. These are exemplified by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority Higher Level Key Skills and include problem solving, communication, and working with others, as well as the effective use of general IT facilities and information retrieval skills. They also include planning self-learning and improving performance, as the foundation for lifelong learning.
The aim of this course is to develop students with the skills to work in the mechanical engineering domain, and ability to solve engineering problems, design systems etc. through creative and innovative thinking.
Students graduating from the proposed programmes would be expected to demonstrate the following skills:
- The ability to apply mathematical, scientific and technological tools
- The ability to analyse and interpret data and, when necessary, design experiments to gain new data
- The ability to maintain a sound theoretical approach in enabling the introduction of new technology
- The ability to apply professional judgement, balancing issues of costs, benefits, safety, quality etc.
- The ability to assess and manage risks.

- Access to HE Diploma - Pass
- BTEC Level 3 Diploma – PPP
- EAL Level 3 Extended Diploma – Pass.
Plus a C grade in Maths and a Science subject at GCSE.
Modules
First year
- Mathematics
- Engineering application and study skills
- Engineering science 1.
Second year
- Materials and intro to manufacturing technology
- Engineering science 2
- Engineering design.
Assessment
Students are assessed by a combination of assessment methods:
- Course Work
- Written Exam.
The Mechanical Engineering qualification can lead to a range of employment opportunities in consulting, contracting and manufacturing in both the public and private sector.
All students completing the Level 4 programme of study are encouraged to ‘top-up’ to the Level 5 HND in Mechanical Engineering again on a part-time basis. The Level 5 HND in Mechanical Engineering is also offered as a full-time course of study.
Students can also progress onto to the HND and subsequently would have the opportunity to move onto the BEng at University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
