A blended learning approach to accountancy

Gower College Swansea has teamed up with Mindful Education to offer a range of flexible accountancy courses that are delivered through a combination of online lessons and on campus classes – perfect for these unusual times.

Working in partnership, the College and the London based education technology form will deliver AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) qualifications from levels 2 to 4, courses that cover a range of disciplines including bookkeeping, costing, and management accounting.

“The recent Coronavirus outbreak has caused considerable upheaval across all aspects of life, particularly the way we work and learn,” says Mindful Education Managing Director, Mark Mckenna. “Concerns around social distancing and increasing unemployment have led adult learners to seek flexible professional courses with an online study element. Our award-winning courses combine the flexibility of online learning with the benefits of tutor-led classroom sessions, allowing students to fit their studies around work and life commitments.”

Online video lectures are accompanied by motion graphics, animation, and interactive quizzes to help embed learning. Lessons are around 45 minutes long and can be accessed from any device, giving students the option to choose how, where and when they want to study.

Students will also enjoy the benefits of regular college classes when it is safe to do so, where their learning will be supported through group exercises and classroom-based learning with an experienced tutor.

Due to the nature of these online and on campus courses, students are able to continue their studies seamlessly with social distancing in place and this flexible approach can be easily adapted should Welsh Government guidance change.

“We’re very proud of our award winning accountancy provision at Gower College Swansea and have worked hard to adapt to the current situation, putting our students at the heart of every decision and development,” says Curriculum Leader Bruce Fellowes. “A blend of online and on campus learning is the best of both worlds for our learners in the current situation and we are looking forward to working with Mindful Education to roll out this mode of delivery while we are working from home and – looking ahead – when we return to an element of face to face teaching at our brand new Sketty Hall Business School later this year.”
