A Level students at Gower College Swansea have been paid a special visit by the Counsel General, Jeremy Miles AM.
At a seminar with Law and Criminology students at the Gorseinon campus, the Counsel General spoke about a range of issues pertaining to access to justice. This included the availability of legal aid, the court modernisation programme, the increasing costs of court fees, legal education and the codification of the law.
The Counsel General said:
“I recognise the key role played by law schools and colleges in educating the next generation of practitioners and very much enjoyed meeting the students to gauge their views on a range of legal matters, particularly around access to legal services and diversity within the profession.”
Mr Miles AM is originally from Pontarddulais. A Welsh speaker, he was educated at Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera and New College, Oxford, where he studied law. As Counsel General, his key responsibilities include the provision of legal advice to the government and the overseeing of the work of the Legal Services Department which provides legal services to the Welsh Government.
“This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to meet the Counsel General and to ask him questions relating to his own career and the wider issues relating to law and criminology,” said Learning Area Manager Bruce Fellowes. “He showed an enormous interest in their work and in their thoughts on the challenges facing people who wish to access legal services in Wales.”
