Staff and students at the Llwyn y Bryn campus were recently approached by the Cultural Services team at City and County of Swansea with a very special request - to redecorate and repaint the Waterfront Winterland Penguins for the children’s ice rink.
So the Level 2 Art and Design students got to work - taking on many responsibilities during the project including graphic design, writing a blog, photography, keeping an eye on costings/pricing materials, and general organisation and health and safety. All this activity was ideal for the Arts Award qualification which runs alongside their First Diploma Level 2 Art.
“This is a great example of how art students can work with local businesses and industry, to provide a working service,” says lecturer Marilyn Jones. “We’re all looking forward to seeing the finished penguins gliding on the ice!”
A number of the penguins have been sponsored by local organisations such as McDonalds, Admiral, Pennant Homes, Limitless and the Grand Theatre.
