Welsh writers inspire students

A Level English students at Gower College Swansea have attended a special workshop with inspiring Welsh writers.

The event, held at the Dylan Thomas Centre, was part of the college’s wider Mis Cwl Cymru campaign and was intended to encourage students to use Wales and Welsh culture as inspiration for their writing.

In attendance was performance poet Martin Daws, who is also the Young People’s Laureate for Wales, and Rhondda-born Rachel Trezise, who won the inaugural Dylan Thomas Prize for Fresh Apples, her collection of short stories describing life in the mining valleys of South Wales.

“We were delighted that both Rachel and Martin could come along and meet the students,” says the college’s Bilingual Champion Anna Davies. “They were really inspiring and gave plenty of tips not just on how to get the creative juices flowing but also how to use Wales and the Welsh identity as a springboard for their writing.”

This event was made possible thanks to funding from ColegauCymru to develop the Welsh language and ethos in our Further Education colleges.
