‘Collider’ is an exhibition following Gower College Swansea’s successful Artists in Residence programme 2015.
On show is the work of the selected artists who participated in this year’s Artists in Residency programme – Jason & Becky and Gareth Southwell.
In addition, there is a showcase of material from Gower College Swansea students from the Saturday Art School initiative and various art and design courses, plus work undertaken by the artists and local NEETs (young people ‘Not in Education, Employment or Training’).
This year’s artists were selected from a wide range of submissions from the Swansea area. One of the main aims of the project was to give the local community a diverse experience of the Swansea art scene so artists were selected artists for their range in expression and philosophy. The selection process consisted of a panel of representatives from the art and design programmes at Gower College Swansea and a representative from Mission Gallery.
Artist collaborators Jason Cartwright and Becky Williams (aka Jason & Becky) had already completed successful residencies with organisations such as the National Theatre of Wales, Elysium Gallery and the then-Swansea Metropolitan University. They have also taken part in shows around the UK, Europe and as far afield as Colorado, USA. Their work explores the idea of sharing ideas through collaborative means with a particular focus on narrative, participation and questioning our social surrounding.
Gareth Southwell is an artist/illustrator who works primarily in pen-and-ink, mainly in the fields of publishing and editorial illustration. His artwork has been produced for cartoons, caricatures and illustrations for various printed media. His past clients include Oxford University Press, Hasbro, Palgrave Macmillan, The Philosophers’ Magazine, Penguin and W. W. Norton. He has a keen interest in comics and is currently collaborating on a graphic novel about Sigmund Freud.
As well as developing their own work, the artists led workshops at Llwyn y Bryn, participated in other events throughout the college calendar and had a profile showing at ‘the […] Space’ at the Mission Gallery in June.
Collider runs at the Elysium Gallery, College Street, Swansea from 7 – 29 August.
