College launches new Employer Board for construction and green skills

Gower College Swansea has launched a brand new Employer Board dedicated to the growing sectors of built environment and the green economy.

Combining the expertise of leading figures from education and industry, the Board - which was recently launched at Sketty Hall Business School – will work together to shape curriculum, support skills development, promote inclusion and diversity, and inspire the next generation.

Their overall vision is to create a highly skilled, competent and confident future-ready construction workforce that drives quality, innovation, sustainability, and economic growth across our region and beyond.

This will be achieved by developing a skilled, diverse, and future-ready construction workforce through employer-led partnership and strategic influence.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to collaborate and innovate,” says the College’s Learning Area Manager for Built Environment, Hannah Pearce. “Together we can share our experiences, identify and develop local talent, and develop a robust curriculum fit for the future. It's an exciting time for the sector, with developments taking shape across the green economy and lots of opportunities on the horizon linked to the Celtic Freeport.

“The Board will ensure that courses and training programs reflect current and future industry needs, technologies, and best practice. We will offer apprenticeships, work placements, mentoring opportunities, and industry insight that empower students with practical, job-ready skills. Sharing our knowledge on emerging trends, sustainable construction practices and the digital world will help to ensure our Further Education programs remain industry-relevant.”

Alongside Hannah, the Employer Board will comprise:

Mark Bowen (Andrew Scott)
Vicky Collard (Swansea Council)
Euros Griffiths (Cyfle)
Samantha Howells (Codi Group)
Jonathan Morris (Tai Tarian)
Wyn Pritchard
Kim Rees (Cyfle)
Chris Rosser (Constructaskill)
Joan Tamlyn (Weavers)
Alec Thomas (NPTC HAPS)
Sarah Thomas (Swansea Council)

“It’s a great honour to take up the position of Chair,” says Mark Bowen, Managing Director of Andrew Scott Ltd. “I’m looking forward to working with the team to set the strategic direction for training and skills development at Gower College Swansea and address the current skills gaps we have in the industry, especially in the green economy.

“Our goal is not just to advise, but to inspire new standards in training and new green technologies. I look forward to building on Gower College Swansea’s strengths to create an employer training board that is creative, innovative and deeply committed to our region’s success.”

“It’s a huge privilege to be asked to be the Vice Chair,” adds Jonathan Morris. “Tai Tarian sees the vital importance of ensuring that the regional economy is invested in and supported. To do this, we need to invest in local skills and training. It is a true partnership that will ensure that skills are developed locally and that the regional economy will benefit. I’m looking forward immensely to getting this work underway and making a difference for all our futures.”
