Overview
Throughout the year, we offer a range of classes tailored to match your proficiency level, allowing you to either take a one-off class or steadily progress through the stages. If your desired class isn't available now, check back at a later date.
French for Holidays
These classes are for travellers planning to visit France or French speaking countries, with little or no prior knowledge of the language. This course covers essential topics including ordering food and drinks, booking accommodations, and visiting tourist offices. Through interactive lessons and practical exercises, students will learn key phrases and vocabulary to have basic conversations in French.
Stage 1
Topics covered in this level include: introducing oneself, (name, nationality, numbers, profession, and basic family information), ordering food and drink in a café, and booking a hotel room. The classes are aimed at complete beginners and it is assumed that participants have no knowledge of the language.
Stage 2
Being comfortable with basic greetings, introductions and the topics covered in Stage 1, students embarking on Stage 2 will be able to increase their confidence in dealing with more holiday situations as well as gaining a greater cultural understanding.
Stage 3
In stage 3, students will practice speaking in the present tense (covered in Stages 1 and 2) and will be introduced to the basic past tense. Topics at this level include describing themselves (including clothing), dealing with situations in a restaurant or hotel, and discussing home, weather, and future holidays.
Stage 4
The stage 4 classes are aimed at students with a good knowledge of French. In this course, students will be introduced to the conditional tense. Topics covered at this level include discussing their house and DIY projects, hobbies, parts of the body, and visiting the doctor and pharmacy.
Stage 5
The stage 5 classes are aimed at students with a good knowledge of French. In this course, students will practice using a variety of tenses in different situations. Topics covered include discussing severe weather, emergencies, visits to the petrol station, and films or books.
Key information
The lessons will comprise a range of activities including reading, listening and speaking. Two hour sessions take place every week. Each lesson contains a mix of reading, listening and speaking activities. You will sometimes work on your own, in pairs or in groups.
There is no exam but you will be informally assessed throughout the course.
