Overview

This qualification is designed to support aspiring staff who would like to make the transition into management, by developing the knowledge requirements that underpin leadership and management within the health and social care sector.

It will provide a stepping stone opportunity for learners wanting or needing to progress to Level 5 and meet the registration requirements for Social Care Wales. Learners will be required to complete this qualification (or an agreed comparable qualification) prior to taking the Level 5 Leadership and Management qualification. 

The qualification is knowledge-based, and is suitable for the following:

  • Learners who have successfully completed a Level 2 Health and Social Care qualification, or a recognised equivalent
  • Learners who have successfully completed a Level 3 Health and Social Care: Practice (Adults) qualification, or a recognised qualification 
  • Learners who have successfully completed a Level 3 Health and Social Care: Practice (Children and Young People) qualification, or a recognised qualification
  • Learners who have successfully completed Advanced GCE in Health and Social Care or Childcare, or a recognised qualification
  • Managers who are required to register with Social Care Wales

Key information

There is an expectation that learners will be proficient at using a computer and associated programmes, as the learner will use an electronic portfolio system throughout the qualification.

All prospective learners will have an initial assessment/interview to discuss the qualification and the expectations of the course with the trainer/assessor.

Learners will need to attend teaching and learning sessions for each unit, and also attend sessions to prepare and undertake the summative assessment tasks, which will be planned with the trainer during the interview. 

The qualification is assessed through a combination of internal and external assessments.

For the external assessments, learners must successfully complete a project that contains a written report, presentation and discussion based on a proposed change to practice. 

For the internal assessments, learners must successfully complete a series of tasks involving both oral and written responses. 

Units

Learners will study three units:

  • Legislation, theories and models of person/child-centred practice
  • Theoretical frameworks for leadership and management in health and social care
  • Leadership and management of effective team performance in health and social care services

To achieve the qualification, learners must achieve 60 credits in total. All units within this qualification are mandatory. 

This qualification will provide learners with the knowledge to take their first step into a leadership role, supporting both horizontal and vertical progression on to:

  • Level 4 Professional Practice in Health and Social Care
  • Level 5 Leadership and Management of Health and Social Care
