Double triumph for Netball Academy

It’s been a busy week for Gower College Swansea’s Netball Academy as they have won not one but two major Welsh tournaments.

The team took the title at the recent Welsh Colleges and Urdd tournaments, making them the double Welsh champions.

“This is an amazing achievement and we are all absolutely delighted,” says Coach Sarah Lewis. “The girls have been working exceptionally hard towards this success, juggling netball training with their academic studies, and these results are a real testament to their dedication."

College selects sports scholarship students for 2014 / 15

Seventeen students at Gower College Swansea have been successful in their applications for sports scholarships, following in the footsteps of alumni such as Leigh Halfpenny, Justin Tipuric and Jazz Carlin.

The specialist scholarship programme is offered to promising young athletes who play representative sport at either county or national level. This year's successful students are:

Swans star inspires students with motivational talk

Swansea City footballer Ashley Williams recently surprised students at Gower College Swansea's Gorseinon campus when he dropped in to give a motivational talk.

During a Q&A session with the students, he and Sports lecturer Duane Saunders discussed his life and career, his motivations for reaching the level that he has and his role models. Ashley also spoke about his parents' influence and his desire to succeed to make their life better.

Dragon Multi-skills and Sport Festival

Gower College Swansea recently held two days of activities for primary school pupils at the Elba sports complex in Gowerton. The college linked with the City and County of Swansea Active Young People team to deliver the Dragon Multi-skills and Sport Festival. This annual event attracted over 566 pupils from eight local schools. Each pupil sampled up to six activities, choosing from a range which included football, hockey, golf and rounders. Staff and sport students from the college had visited schools over the preceding weeks to provide coaching and raise awareness of the event.

Fun in the sun for students

Over 50 ESOL students from Gower College Swansea were recently treated to an end-of-term sports day at the 360 Centre where they enjoyed beach volleyball, rounders and an egg and spoon race in the glorious sunshine.

The day was organised by Level 3 Sports students from the Tycoch campus and the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) teaching team.
