New International students enjoy the city centre experience

A group of our new students recently enjoyed a Swansea city centre orientation exercise with the International team.

They visited Swansea's famous indoor market where they sampled cockles, laverbread and Welsh cakes. The tour also took in Castle Gardens and Swansea Marina.

The College has almost 100 International students currently studying across the Gorseinon, Tycoch and Llwyn y Bryn campuses.

Outstanding results for International A Level students

This year’s A2 class scooped amazing A Level results with an impressive 64% achieving A* or A grades.

Over 90% of these students have been accepted by Russell Group universities, including Oxbridge.

Our AS Level students had a lot to celebrate too, with ten students achieving either four or three A grades.

We would like to say a big well done to all of our students and wish each and every one of them success in their forthcoming studies.

Urdd success for Maggie

One of our International students took third prize at the recent Urdd Eisteddfod 2018 (regional selection category).

Maggie, who is originally from China, designed and produced a lino cut print based on the theme of urban environment.

Her art teachers thought her print was one of the most original designs from the group of first year fine art students.

Well done Maggie, a fantastic result for your first year in Wales!

China visit a success

Principal Mark Jones was invited by Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) - the number one ranked foreign languages university in China - to deliver a keynote speech at their fifth Principal Round Table Summit on ‘challenges and solutions in International education’.

Mark also had the honour of being appointed to the BFSU International Advisory Board.

In recent years, BFSU has established a number of K-12 International schools, some of which offer IGCSE and A Level qualifications.

Class of 2018

Our 2018 class of A2 international students attended a graduation lunch ceremony at Sketty Hall.

The event was an opportunity to recognise the fact that 100% of our International A2 students received offers to study at Russell Group universities.

College staff and Homestay hosts, who our students had lived with during their time in Swansea, were able to congratulate the group on their amazing success.

The International department wishes all of our A2 students a fond farewell and every success for their future.

International students head off to Heatherton

Our first year students had a great day out at Heatherton World of Activities during the Easter break.

From water zorbing to zip wiring and go karting, their enthusiasm remained intact even during the rain!

This fun event gave the group a chance to relax together before getting down to the serious business of the upcoming exam season.

Horizons broaden for International team

The College's International Manager Kieran Keogh has recently returned from a successful business trip to Hong Kong and mainland China.

In Hong Kong, Kieran attended a recruitment event with Amber Education, one of the largest student recruitment agencies in the area. In mainland China, he signed agreements with six new partner schools in Zhuzhou, Lanzhou, Shenyang and Beijing.

Kieran also met with Chinese investors regarding the potential to develop a Gower College Swansea campus in China.

A stunning performance from Cissy

Cissy, one of our current International students, delighted listeners at a recent National Waterfront Museum event to showcase Chinese culture and celebrate Chinese New Year.

The event, which was organised by the Chinese in Wales Association, attracted dignitaries and visitors from across the region.

Cissy plays the erhu, a traditional Chinese instrument, and was requested to play after being spotted at another event.

The performance was very well received and enjoyed by all.

International students out and about at Christmas

In the busy run-up to Christmas, our International Students have been out and about - and getting into the festive spirit.

First up was a visit to Bath where they explored the Roman Baths before making a stop at the city's impressive Christmas market and historic Royal Crescent.

Back home in Swansea, the students took time out from their studies to visit the annual Waterfront Winterland attraction where they braved the elements to enjoy the rides and a spot of ice skating.
