Overview
The Level 3 Diploma in Fitness Instructing is suitable for those who wish to prepare to work as a Personal Trainer and be recognised on the Register of Exercise Professionals. The qualification is also suitable for those who already have experience in the exercise and fitness industry but who would benefit from additional training.
Key information
Level 3 Diploma in Gym Instruction - applicants should be aged 18 years or over, with a standard of literacy and numeracy appropriate to a Level 3 qualification. Experience within the Industry is desirable and an interview is required.
There are seven units to be studied - Customer Service, Health, Safety and Safeguarding and Principles of Exercise Fitness and Health (all to be covered at Level 3). Then:
Anatomy and Physiology: This unit covers the advanced knowledge in anatomy and physiology that an instructor needs to design safe and effective programmes for a range of clients.
Programming Personal Training with Clients: This unit covers the knowledge and skills that a personal trainer will need to design, manage and adapt training programmes for healthy adults of all ages. The client base may include young people (14-16 yrs), older adults, ante and post natal clients and those with disabilities as long as the relevant contraindications and key safety guidelines are observed.
Delivering Personal Training Sessions: This unit covers the knowledge and skills that a personal trainer will need to deliver training programmes for healthy adults of all ages. The client base may include young people (14-16 yrs), older adults, ante and post natal clients and those with disabilities as long as the relevant contraindications and key safety guidelines are observed. This unit does not however prepare the instructor to teach specialist classes.
Applying the Principles of Nutrition as part of a Personal Training Programme: This unit covers the application of the principles of nutrition to support client goals as part of an exercise and physical activity programme.
The course is delivered in classroom but also includes practical activities within a variety of environments. Assessments include two exams, practical observed session and a portfolio of evidence.
The qualification opens up the following progression routes:
- Employment as a personal trainer at a gym or independently.
- Undertake additional Level 3 qualifications
- Access Level 4 qualifications or foundation degrees.
