Gower College Swansea students performed exceptionally well at the recent WorldSkills UK LIVE National Finals at Birmingham’s NEC.
Electronic Engineering student Jamie Skyrme took home a Gold Medal in the Industrial Electronics category after undertaking a challenging set of competition tasks including fault finding, electronic design, programming and prototyping.
In the Restaurant Services category, Paulina Skoczek was awarded a Silver Medal while Paige Jones received a Bronze Medal. Their tasks included preparing mocktails, Cointreau cream coffees, a flambé and Champagne afternoon tea.
“We are absolutely delighted for Jamie – and for fellow student Matthew Belton who also made the UK finals stage,” says Curriculum Leader for Electronic Engineering, Steve Williams. “In addition to our competing students, we also had Richard Kostromin and Callum Elsey running the interactive showcase on a SMART home set-ups theme. To be able to host the showcase and interact with the thousands of visitors to the stand was a fantastic confidence boosting experience.”
“This is the fourth consecutive year that Hospitality and Catering students from Gower College Swansea have made it to the final stages of this prestigious event,” adds Learning Area Manager Mark Clement. “We are so pleased that Paige and Paulina have had this wonderful opportunity to show off their skills and compete at such a high level.”
"Our Gold, Silver and Bronze medals have ensured that Gower College Swansea finished in the Top 10 of UK colleges in WorldSkills rankings, which is a fantastic achievement,” says Principal Mark Jones. “My congratulations and thanks go not only to the students, who worked so hard in preparation for the WorldSkills competition, but also to the dedicated teaching teams who have mentored them throughout every stage of this process.”
