Overview

In this Further Mathematics course, you will build on your A Level Mathematics knowledge to further your mathematical understanding.

In the Further Pure Mathematics part of the course, you will study complex numbers, matrices, vectors, proofs by mathematical induction, polar coordinates and hyperbolic functions.

In Further Statistics you will study further statistical distributions, random variables and the Poisson process, relationships between variables and goodness of fit of a model, and estimation.

Lastly, Further Mechanics will cover momentum and impulse, Hooke’s law, energy and power, circular motion, rectilinear motion, centre of mass and equilibrium of rigid bodies.

Course Objectives:

  • Develop a deep understanding of various areas of further mathematics and how they relate to each other
  • Continue to develop your mathematical skills and techniques, enabling you to solve more complex and unstructured problems
  • Improve your logical reasoning abilities, allowing you to identify incorrect reasoning, make generalisations, and construct mathematical proofs.

A Level Further Mathematics opens up a world of opportunities. Universities highly value this qualification, increasing your chances of admission to prestigious degree programs in Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, and more. It equips you with advanced problem-solving and analytical skills sought after in careers such as:

  • Engineering
  • Finance
  • Data Analysis
  • Cryptography
  • Scientific research.

A Level Further Mathematics can also lead to professional qualifications such as becoming a Chartered Mathematician or an Actuary.

You must study A Level Mathematics and A Level Further Mathematics together. This is a very challenging A Level option and should only be taken if your chosen University course specifies Further Mathematics.

You will need a CASIO FX-991EX Advanced Engineering/Scientific Calculator. These can be purchased from the LRC in Gorseinon.

We offer opportunities to sit the UKMT Challenges, Ser Mathemateg and STEP/MAT exams.
