An A Level student from Gower College Swansea has been awarded the prestigious Welsh Young Economist of the Year title by Discover Economics.
Cole Brydson, who is in his second year at the Gorseinon campus studying A Levels in Business Studies, Economics and Digital Technology as well as the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales, was recognised for his insightful essay about the drivers of wealth inequality in the UK and how can they be addressed.
Discover Economics is a charity aimed at improving representation in economics.
Cole’s award forms part of the Young Economist of the Year competition, an annual event organised by Discover Economics in partnership with the Royal Economic Society, KPMG and the Financial Times.
Aimed at students in Years 10 to 13, the competition encourages them to explore contemporary economic challenges while promoting the study of economics.
The Welsh Young Economist of the Year is awarded in partnership with Welsh Government.
Cole will now be offered the opportunity to tour the Welsh Treasury in recognition of his excellent work.
“We are really delighted for Cole that his work stood out among a very competitive field, securing him the Wales award at the competition,” says lecturer Olivia Wild.
“I was very surprised when I found out I’d won and I’m really grateful and excited to have the offer to tour the Treasury,” says Cole, who achieved four A grades at his AS Level exams earlier this year. “After College I’m planning to apply for university – options at the moment include studying Land Economy at Cambridge or Economics at Bristol.”
