We organised a Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work Taster Day jointly with Hywel TEifi Academy, Swansea University for those students who have an interest in following a career in those fields.
The day was organised by our Welsh Manager, Anna Davies, “The aim was to encourage Welsh-medium students to study their Nursing, Midwifery or Social Work course in Welsh at Swansea University, and apply for an incentive scholarship that is attached to those courses.”
We worked with the colleges and Welsh-medium schools in the south-west region to ensure the message reached as many people as possible, and that every potential students had a chance to attend the day.
Students received short lectures in Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work from Welsh speaking lecturers at Swansea University. The students were lucky enough to receive plenty of tips for their application form, the interview process and studying through the medium of Welsh.
Indeg Owen, Branch Officer for the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol at Swansea University said “They received practical session in the clinical rooms. They varied from brushing patients’ teeth, delivering a baby, making a bed, and taking blood pressure. These were all totally new experiences for the
students. A discussion on what it takes to be a good social worker was also given. This focused students thought on what they need to demonstrate in the application forms and at interview.”
Following the success of the day we hope to track the number of students that now go on to study on these courses, in Welsh, and receive a scholarship to do so.
