Magnificent Seven head to Oxbridge

Students

Seven Gower College Swansea students have been offered places at Oxford and Cambridge Universities this year.

“We are absolutely delighted, especially as these are only a few of the total cohort who will be starting their further studies in Universities around the UK in September,” says Principal Mark Jones. “Over 1000 students from Gower College Swansea have applied to enter Higher Education and more than 900 have already been made offers. Of those, 200 are expecting to attend Russell Universities. Our success in sending students on to University and specialist colleges is a tribute to the students’ own hard work and to the support and commitment they receive from the very high calibre of our teaching staff.”

The Oxbridge-bound students (and their former schools) are:

  • Joshua Thomas (Penyrheol Comprehensive) will read Biological Sciences at Jesus College, Oxford.
  • Tudor Evans (Bishopston Comprehensive) will read Natural Sciences at Jesus College, Cambridge.
  • Jamie Dougherty (Bishopston Comprehensive) will read Mathematics at Jesus College, Cambridge.
  • Shannon Phillips (Oasis International School in Ankara, Turkey) will read Linguistics at Downing College, Cambridge.
  • Ruth Rigden (Springfield Secondary School in Singapore) will read Linguistics at Magdalene College, Cambridge.
  • Ruth Harvey (Bishopston Comprehensive) will read Natural Sciences at Magdalene College, Cambridge.
  • Hannah Whitehouse (Penyrheol Comprehensive), who has already completed her A Levels, has an unconditional place to read Law at Jesus College, Cambridge.
