Overview

This qualification allows candidates to learn, develop and practice the skills required to inspect and test items of electrical equipment in-line with the latest edition of the Code for Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.

If you already work as an electrician, this course will allow you to upskill and progress in the industry

Key information

City and Guilds does not set entry requirements for this qualification; however, centers must ensure candidates have the potential and opportunity to gain the qualification successfully. 

City and Guilds cannot accept registrations for candidates under 18, as this qualification is not approved for under 18s 

It is expected that candidates attempting the qualification should be familiar with electrical systems and hazards of electricity in order to satisfactorily complete this qualification.

Candidates who are holders of an ECS card, JIB electrician grade card, or have successfully completed an NVQ based electrotechnical apprenticeship or technical certificate to Level 3, should be familiar with the electrical systems and hazards electricity can bring.

Without evidence of formal qualifications, candidates must be able to demonstrate adequate prior knowledge and expertise to ensure they have the potential to successfully gain the ability to undertake electrical inspection and testing in a competent manner, for the inspection and testing qualification. 

This qualification will be delivered over three days and will involve theory and practical training. 

Units

  • Understand the definitions used within the IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment
  • Understand the statutory and non-statutory requirements relevant to the management and maintenance of electrical equipment
  • Understand the electrical units of measurement associated with in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment
  • Understand the equipment construction classes and methods of protection within an electrical installation, and how these relate to the provision of protection against electric shock
  • Understand the procedures for the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment
  • Understand how to carry out combined inspection and testing
  • Understand the information that needs to be recorded following in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment

The course fee is £300.

Assessment

Online multiple-choice test assessment conditions: Open book and invigilated.

Grading: Pass/Fail

Grade boundaries: The exam consists of 50 questions and is 105 minutes in duration. The pass mark is set at 80% with the exam being open book.

Candidates must have their own copy of the IET code of practice for in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment 5the edition, which can be used in the online exam.

Practical assignment

The practical assignment covers Inspection and Testing of Class 1 and Class 2 or Class 3 FE equipment. 

The assignment contains three tasks:

Task one: Inspect and test an item of Class 1 equipment.
Task two: Inspect and test an item of Class 2 equipment (Class 2 incorporating unearthed metal, Class 2 without unearthed metal or Class 2 FE).
Task three: Complete appropriate documentation.
