Students enjoy sport conference

A group of L3 Sport students on the Gorseinon campus visited a ‘Bilingualism in Sport’ conference at Cardiff and Vale College.

The day was organised by the college, following sponsorship from CollegesWales, with the aim of promoting the Welsh language in sport. There was an interesting session from Huw Llywelyn Davies about commentating bilingually for the BBC on rugby, football and cricket games, and students got a taste of commentating on live games.

Celebrating 'Welsh Week'

We had a week full of events to celebrate Welshness in the college around our Patron Saint day - St David’s Day.

The common rooms on every campus were decorated all over with daffodils, yellow and green balloons, Welsh flags and daffodil and leek bunting from pillar to pillar. Of course there was plenty of free Welsh cakes for students as well!

Welsh Language Music Day

Gower College Swansea’s Gorseinon campus was full to the brim last week when it celebrated Welsh Language Music Day – a national day established to celebrate modern Welsh language music.

Menter Iaith Abertawe visited the college to DJ a Welsh language playlist from bands such as Candelas, Sŵnami, Bryn Fôn and Llareggub Brass Band and raise awareness amongst students of the variety of Welsh music.

College celebrates Santes Dwynwen

Gower College Swansea has celebrated Santes Dwynwen day in style this year.  The common room at Gorseinon was decorated with red heart shaped balloons, flyers with the story of Dwynwen were scattered everywhere and plenty of chocolates, sweets and heart shaped jellies were given to students to raise awareness of the day.

On the Llwyn y Bryn campus, Library Assistant Kath Oakwood created a lovely Santes Dwynwen display and Student Recreational Officer Marc Nurse distributed sweets and flyers across the Tycoch campus.

Success for college swimmers

Four Gower College Swansea students, who are all studying A Levels at the Gorseinon campus, took part in the recent Urdd National Swimming Gala.

Dylan Lambropolus, Kyle Job, Oliver Jones and Lewis Quirk came first in two relay races – the medley and the freestyle. They were competing against pupils and students from all over Wales in the ‘over year 11’ age category.
