Health and Social Care: Core Level 2 - Qualification
Overview
This qualification is suitable for individuals working in, or intending to work in the Health and Social Care sectors:
- Learners aged 16+, currently working in or intending to work in the health and social care sector
- Social care workers (Adults)
- Social care workers (Children and Young People)
- Healthcare support workers
- Healthcare assistants
The course content supports learning to develop their knowledge and understanding of:
- The core principles and values which underpin health and social care practice
- Ways of working in the health and social care sectors
- Effective practice within health and social care
- Progression routes to further study or employment within health and social care
Key information
Learners will attend College for a full day every two weeks for teaching and learning in preparation for assessments, and to successfully achieve the externally set MCQ (Multiple-choice questions).
There are three pathways available for this qualification:
- Adults
- Children and Young People
- Combined pathway
Learners will work with a dedicated trainer/assessor who is qualified within the sector, with support available for any additional learning needs through an assessment with the neurodiversity team.

If you are undertaking the Level 2 Core qualification as part of the Level 2 Foundation Apprenticeship, or the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Adults or Children and Young People, the Level 2 Core is mandatory under the framework. You will progress on to:
- Level 2 Health and Social Care: Practice (Adults)
- Level 3 Health and Social Care: Practice (Adults)
- Level 3 Health and Social Care: Practice (Children and Young People)
The qualification will provide a broad knowledge across health and social care.
The Level 2 Health and Social Care: Core qualification provides the knowledge to progress on to:
- Level 2 Health and Social Care Principles and Contexts
- Level 3 Health and Social Care Principles and Contexts (Adults/Children and Young People)
- Advanced GCE and Advanced Subsidiary GCE in Health and Social Care, and Childcare
