Access to Science
Overview
The Access to Science course is studied over one year and offers direct university entrance to many bioscience related degree courses in the UK. It focuses heavily on practical aspects of science and you will spend significant time carrying out modern, exciting industrial laboratory procedures – including genetic engineering.
You will study modules in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, whilst also being required to achieve in the core modules (communication, IT, study skills and research project).
Throughout the programme, we will focus on developing the skills, knowledge and understanding which will enable you to be successful in higher education.

Key information
This course is aimed at students who are at least 19 years of age and have a strong desire to study a science based subject at university. Applicants require a GCSE Mathematics grade A-C qualification (Grade D will require an Interview and mathematical evaluation). A Level 2 qualification in Science, or successful completion of the pre-access programme, is desirable. During the interview process, applicants can expect to undertake an initial assessment which will explore basic numeracy and communication skills. Furthermore, you will need to demonstrate a positive attitude, commitment and a genuine enthusiasm to study science.
Throughout the academic year you will gain credit via a process of continuous coursework assessment. A variety of formal and informal assessment techniques will be employed, including examinations, practicals, scientific reports, research projects and presentations.
The course timetable consists of 13 hours of classroom contact over 4 days per week. Included in the tuition time is one hour of tutorial support where you will be offered advice and guidance on UCAS applications, interview techniques careers and general wellbeing.
The course is ideal for students who wish to progress on to degree or diploma courses in the biological sciences and eventually pursue a career in a science based profession, eg pharmacology, dietetics, radiography, physiotherapy, cardiology and biomedical science.
Past students have progressed on to careers in teaching, youth and community work, public administration and counselling.
