Gowerton pupils taking part in the Kick Start Programme at Gower College Swansea held a Frosty Friday at the Gorseinon campus - selling Joe's ice cream as part of their Enterprise qualification.
“This was an opportunity for the pupils to put their theory into action," says lecturer Lucy Turtle, who organised the event alongside Kick Start Ambassador Curtis Cana. "They had put an awful lot of planning into this - creating a business plan, carrying out market research and working out the amount of profit they can make for Gowerton School.”
Former GCS student Curtis is currently on a work placement at the college and has been a great mentor for the students.
“I am just completing my first year at university studying Youth & Community Work," he says. “I am the first person in my family to go through Higher Education so it was a huge step for me. I very much enjoyed my time during school and I participated in many different roles such as School Council and Head Boy. I recognised the support that was available to me and the potential of setting myself long term goals in order to get where I need to be in life. Therefore I feel it’s important for me to show the pupils on the Kick Start Programme that anything is possible."
“I've recently been appointed as a Level 1 Youth Worker for the local authority and my job is to engage with young people aged between 11 – 25. Before that I volunteered with Swansea Young People Services for many years and I have adapted this role in my university work placement at Gower College Swansea.”
