The Gower College Swansea One Year Acting Company staged the gritty play “13” at the Swansea Grand Theatre in March. This was followed by an invitation to transfer to the Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff and the production will open there on 22 July and run until 26 July.
Guest director Catherine Paskell is an Associate Director for the National Theatre of Wales.
Curriculum Leader Bob Barton commented: “Working on the play has been a joy and discovering the world in which ‘13’ is set has really opened all our eyes to the sensation that our world is spinning out of control.”
All the students involved are following the intensive one year Performing Arts (Acting) course which is designed for students aged 18 plus who have completed a three A Level programme, which includes Drama or an Extended Diploma in Performing Arts, and are aiming to apply to specialist drama colleges or university. During the year they have further developed a range of acting, voice and movement skills and been assisted in their preparation for auditions.
David Lloyd-Jones, Learning Area Manager for the Creative Arts commented: “We are delighted that the standard of work produced by these students has resulted in the invitation to stage “13” at the Chapter Arts Centre. Students have opportunities during this course to engage in a variety of performance projects and to work with professional theatre directors and this accolade illustrates the value of such collaboration. Graduates of this course have progressed to a number of nationally acclaimed colleges and universities including Arts. Ed., Bristol Old Vic, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, RADA, E15, LAMDA, Mountview, Exeter University, as well as securing professional theatre and television work.”
