A group of Morriston Comprehensive pupils, working with Enterprise Officer Lucy Turtle, have organised the first ‘pop up cinema’ at the college, as part of the Kick Start Programme.
They screened two showings of A Streetcar Named Desire for A Level English students at Gorseinon. Curriculum Leader Joanna Dudley was delighted with the outcome of the event.
“I'd like to thank Lucy and the pupils for organising this pop-up cinema,” she said. “It was an excellent opportunity for our students to watch a great version of the play A Streetcar Named Desire which they are studying for their exams. It definitely helped them to gain a greater understanding of the characters and the tensions between them. From the gasps and laughter, it was clear that the students were really engaged in the film and they very much enjoyed the popcorn as well!”
All proceeds from selling the popcorn went towards the Kenya Community Education Project.
“This was a great opportunity for the Morriston pupils to gain an insight into running an event and selling popcorn as a business,” adds Lucy. “They were able to interact with staff and students and gain new enterprise/employability skills too.”
The Kick Start Programme is a new initiative developed by Gower College Swansea and aimed at Key Stage 4 students from across Swansea who enrol at college to complete a BTEC in Vocational Studies. This course enables them to study a range of different pathways and gives them the opportunity to discover an area of interest that they could pursue on leaving school.
There are currently six schools taking part in the programme with each group following a bespoke course tailored to their needs e.g. forensic science, plumbing, hair and beauty, printmaking, sound recording, enterprise, catering and engineering.
