Vocational Studies students from the Bridge programme at Gower College Swansea have been asked to take part in a focus group session about the community of Townhill.
They were recently visited by former students Curtis Cana and Ashlee Wilde, who delivered the session as part of their degree course in Youth and Community Work at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
Curtis and Ashlee have conducted a profile on Townhill and wanted to interview college students about their experiences of living there and in similar areas of Swansea.
“I love living in Townhill and I would never move,” says Curtis. “It has a fantastic community feel and when everyone comes together for events, it’s amazing. Yes it does have some problems, just like anywhere else, but Townhill really does have great people and great facilities.”
“Townhill has lots of great facilities that people can access,” agrees Zara, a Bridge student. “However, it would be fantastic if they had more support facilities for disabled people and that’s the kind of thing we talked about in the focus group.”
"I was delighted to have Curtis and Ashlee meet our students as they are such wonderful role models,” says lecturer Lucy Turtle. “We are now in the process of collaborating with Cardiff Metropolitan University to organise an event at Townhill as part of the Bridge programme. This will be great opportunity for Bridge students to build links with the university and local community groups."
The Bridge programme is aimed at young people aged 16-19 who are undecided about their future career path. It gives them an opportunity to sample a range of different subject areas, enabling them to make informed decisions about their next step and equipping them with skills and qualities that are required by employers and which make them better prepared for the world of work.
