Health and Social Care: Professional Practice Level 4 - Qualification
Overview
This qualification is designed to support aspiring staff who would like to make the transition into management. It will enable learners to develop and demonstrate their knowledge, understanding, behaviours, skills and practice within the context of their chosen pathway.
In particular, learners will be able to demonstrate that they:
- Have developed and applied knowledge, understanding and skills in the chosen pathway
- Have developed and applied knowledge and understanding of theories, models and approaches applicable to the chosen pathway
- Have developed and applied knowledge as well as understanding of how to maintain and improve outcomes for individuals within the chosen pathway
- Have developed as effective and independent learners, as well as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds in the context of the chosen pathway
- Use an enquiring, critical approach to distinguish facts and opinions; to build arguments and make informed judgements in the context of the chosen pathway within health and social care settings
- Have developed self-awareness skills in order to improve practice within the chosen pathway
- Have developed knowledge and understanding of person/child-centred approaches across a range of settings
- Use literacy, numeracy and digital literacy skills as appropriate within their role
It provides progression for learners who have completed any of the following qualifications:
- Level 2 Health and Social Care: Practice (Adults)
- Level 3 Health and Social Care: Practice (Adults)
- Level 3 Health and Social Care: Practice (Children and Young People)
Key information
There is an expectation that learners will be proficient at using a computer and associated programmes. The learner will use an electronic portfolio system throughout the qualification.
All prospective learners will have an initial assessment/interview to discuss the qualification and the expectations of the course with the trainer/assessor.
Learners will need to attend up to 10 taught/study sessions for teaching, learning and formative assessment, which will prepare them for the assessments surrounding the summative structured tasks. This includes keeping a portfolio of evidence, which will be guided by the trainer/assessor.
Learners will also need to complete written responses as directed by the trainer/assessor as well as an assessment pack, which will be internally and externally assessed.
An evaluation of practice based on their area will also need to be completed, which will form the basis of the last task which will involve a project related to a change in practice. The learner will then need to implement this plan with support from their manager, and then be observed by the assessor in practice. The final task will be a professional discussion with the assessor.
Units
The qualification is made up of three units, including:
- Legislation, theories and models of a person/child-centred practice
- Professional practice
- A sector specific unit
The sector specific unit will be one of the following:
- Leading support for reducing restrictive practices through positive approaches for behaviour
- Leading practice with individuals living with mental ill-health
- Leading practice with individuals living with dementia
- Leading practice with individuals living with a learning disability/autism
- Leading practice for disabled children and young people
- Leading practice for children and young people who are looked after
- Leading practice with families and carers
On completion of the qualification, learners could progress to:
- Level 4 Preparing for Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care
- Level 5 Leadership and Management of Health and Social Care Practice
