Overview

This course is aimed at students who are passionate about music and production.  Working within the college recording studios and iMac facilities you will be using up to date, professional software to learn modern recording and production techniques, as well as the theory that underpins them.   

Course Objectives: 

  • Using production tools and the recording studios to capture, edit and mix a range of audio recordings
  • Learn to create, edit and manipulate sound to produce vibrant and exciting compositions
  • Understand the process of music creation and identify the techniques used in commercial recordings. 

Course Outcomes: 

By the end of year 2 you will have produced a portfolio of recording and composition coursework and be able to identify and understand the theory behind commercial production techniques. 

Key information

  • A minimum of seven GCSEs at grades A*-C, including English Language
  • An ability to play an instrument or be able to demonstrate relevant production experience 
  • GCSE Music is not essential, but a general knowledge of music is an advantage.

The course is delivered through a combination of classroom lectures and hands on practical experience. Students will also have access to the recording studios and iMac suite outside of their timetabled lectures to complete assignments and enhance their practical experience. 

Assessment: 

Final assessment takes place at the end of year 2 across 4 modules. 

  • Recording (20%): Coursework 
  • Composition (20%): Coursework 
  • Listening and Analysing (25%): Examination 
  • Analysing and Producing (35%): Examination 

On completion of the A Level in Music Technology, students have progressed into higher education to study a wide range of popular music (BA) and sound engineering (BSc) courses, or into the industry working in high profile arts venues cross the country.   

Former students include professional session musicians and studio engineers, successful performers who have performed on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, live sound engineers, writers and composers, technology developers, and many more.
