Fashion and Textiles Foundation Level 2 - Apprenticeship
Overview
This qualification is designed for those of you who are working, or want to work, in the fashion and textile industry. It provides you with the opportunity to develop your work-based industry specific knowledge at Level 2, to support progression into higher levels of learning, to improve your performance at work or to increase future employment prospects.
This qualification is also suitable for you if you are a mature, semi-experienced employee. Completing this qualification will ensure recognition of your industrial knowledge at Level 2. As an existing employee, your employer may also use the qualification to upskill you and address any skills gaps they may have within their businesses, ensuring that processes and technological practices are up-to-date and their skills base remains world class.
Models of delivery can be tailored to suit your employer. Some apprentices complete their qualification in house at their place of work with visits from college staff. Other models of delivery include attending college every two weeks for the duration of the programme (two days per month) with continuous assessment in the workplace.
Gower College Swansea is the only pan-Wales provider of this course, and are the only Welsh education partner of the UKFT, the sector skills body for Fashion and Textiles.

Key information
You do not need a formal qualification for entry onto the Fashion and Textiles Foundation Apprenticeship (L2). However, to fully benefit from this qualification at Level 2, you may find it advisable to have some prior knowledge and understanding of fashion and textiles.
Employment in a relevant sewing manufacturing setting is also desirable.
Level 2 Certificate in Apparel Footwear Leather or Textile Production (Sewn Products)
This qualification has been designed in association with Creative Skillset, following research into skills requirements for the future. It provides learners with specialist and transferable skills, engages them with current industry practice, and prepares them to progress onto further qualifications or employment opportunities. Learners will complete this qualification with a concrete understanding of the following:
- The history of the apparel, footwear, leather or textiles industry
- Health and safety requirements, including the legal requirements of employers and employees
- How to develop good relationships in the working environment
- Quality standards
- Sewing and Making Up Operations
- The Production Process
- Materials Used in the Manufactureof Sewn Products
- Essential Skills in Digital Literacy, Application of Number and Literacy
Level 2 Certificate in Manufacturing Sewn Products (NVQ)
This qualification has been developed in association with Creative Skillset, the Sector Skills Council SSC for apparel, footwear, textiles and related businesses. It is a work-based qualification that develops specialist and transferable professional skills, engages learners with current industry practice, and prepares them to progress onto further qualifications or employment opportunities. Learners will complete this qualification with a concrete understanding of the following:
- Health,safety and security at work
- How to carry out routine maintenance of tools and equipment, including recognising potential problems and keeping the work area clean and tidy.
- Essential Skills are also part of the qualification if you do not have GCSE Maths and English or equivalent
Learners who complete this qualification can progress to full employment or to more skilled activities within the chosen industry. They can also progress to other relevant Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications including an Apprenticeship programme.
