Students at Gower College Swansea were introduced to lots of exciting career and volunteering opportunities at a recent Green Summit held at the Gorseinon Campus.
The Sustainable Futures event was organised by the College’s dedicated Environment Club with the guidance of Environment and Sustainability Advisor, Laura Wilkins.
Students were able to meet with professionals from leading local organisations, chatting about sustainable issues and finding out more about potential career development pathways.
The College would like to extend a huge thank you to the many individuals and organisations to who supported the event: Swansea Council; Swansea University; The Environment Centre; City Science; RWE Renewables UK Ltd; Down to Earth Project; Marine Matters; Bwyd Abertawe; National Trust; Keep Wales Tidy; Gower Seal Project; Môr Hapus; The Orchard Project; How Bad Are Bananas; GCS Environment Club; Calvin Williams; Paul Jenkins; and One Voice Wales.
“Young people have a huge role to play in shaping the future of our planet and they have lots of fresh ideas which they are keen to share and develop,” says Laura.
“So it makes sense to bring them together with local organisations so they can find out more and get involved in practical things like, for example, beach cleaning.
“It was also fantastic to hear about the progress being made when it comes to sustainability in the energy sector and the importance of looking after our seas.
“Every single thing we can do, no matter how seemingly small, adds up. And let’s not forget the benefits to our health and wellbeing when we connect with nature.
“In keeping with the ‘green’ theme, students also set up a second-hand clothes stall at the event where they sold pre-loved items, again with the aim of cutting down on waste and reducing what goes to landfill.”
This event was made possible thanks to funding from Welsh Government in partnership with Inspiring Skills Wales.
