Fashion and Textiles Level 1 - SEG Award
Overview
The SEG Awards Level 1 - Award in Fashion and Textiles is a year-long course starting in September. The award has been developed with the primary aim of enabling learners to acquire the depth of skills underpinning knowledge to progress into further education/training or employment within the fashion and textiles industries.
You will undertake two units each worth 6 credits, which make up the full award totalling 12 credits.
UNIT 1: Pattern Construction (6 credits - 60 hours)
In this unit, learners will develop basic skills and understanding of the construction of flat patterns and acquire a theoretical and practical knowledge of lay planning and an appreciation of fabric economy. They will consolidate the knowledge acquired for establishing a base for further progress and understand the importance of safety in a workroom.
UNIT 2: Garment Construction (6 credits - 60 hours)
In this unit, learners will develop technical knowledge in garment construction and develop basic skills in the usage of industrial sewing machinery. They will develop an understanding of manufacturing specifications and quality requirements and develop dexterity and technical knowledge in machining and pressing, in a variety of fabrics. Learners will gain an understanding of the importance of interfacing in garment making and of the correct choice of needle and thread in relation to various fabrics. They will display knowledge of machining faults and their remedies and understand the importance of safety in a workroom.
Course objectives:
- To equip you with the professional skills to construct and adapt your own garment patterns
- To understand the principles of garment manufacture, creating a range of sewing samples suitable for garments
- You will learn how to manufacture fashion garments, follow health and safety and understand quality control checks.
Course outcomes:
- You will produce a professional portfolio of evidence documenting your work from each unit.
- You will use and adapt skirt, bodice, sleeve and collar patterns
- You will produce a finished full-scale garment pattern
- You will produce a set of garment manufacture samples
- You will also produce 2 finished full-size garments.

Completion of this course will allow you to progress onto the Fashion & Textiles Level 2.
Progression from any part-time course could offer a pathway to full-time courses in art and design. For adult learners considering a creative career, the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course could provide a progression route for this.
